How to Tarp a Roof?

New Jersey Roofer

Tarping a roof is a temporary solution to prevent further water damage before permanent repairs can be made. Here's a step-by-step guide on how to tarp a roof:

  1. Safety First: Before starting, ensure safety by using proper protective gear, including gloves and non-slip footwear. Work on the roof only if it's safe to do so, considering weather conditions and roof stability.

  2. Gather Materials: You'll need a sturdy tarp large enough to cover the damaged area, along with roofing nails, a hammer, a utility knife, and rope or bungee cords.

  3. Assess the Damage: Evaluate the extent of the damage and identify the affected area that needs to be covered with the tarp. Look for any sharp objects or debris that may puncture the tarp.

  4. Prepare the Tarp: Lay out the tarp on a flat surface near the damaged area. Fold or trim the tarp to fit the size and shape of the damaged section, leaving a generous overlap on all sides.

  5. Secure the Tarp: Position the tarp over the damaged area, ensuring it covers the entire affected section and extends beyond the edges of the roof. Use roofing nails to secure the tarp to the roof deck, placing nails approximately every 6 to 12 inches along the perimeter of the tarp.

  6. Anchor the Tarp: To prevent the tarp from lifting or blowing away in strong winds, use rope or bungee cords to anchor the tarp securely to the roof or nearby structures. Tie the ropes or cords through the grommets or around the edges of the tarp and secure them tightly.

  7. Overlap Seams: If using multiple tarps to cover a larger area, overlap the seams by at least 6 inches and secure them together with rope or duct tape to create a watertight seal.

  8. Inspect and Reinforce: Once the tarp is in place, carefully inspect it to ensure there are no gaps or tears that could allow water to seep through. Reinforce any weak spots with additional nails or rope as needed.

  9. Monitor and Replace: Regularly check the tarp to ensure it remains secure and intact. Replace the tarp with a permanent roofing solution as soon as possible to prevent further damage.

Remember that tarping a roof is only a temporary measure. It's essential to schedule permanent repairs with a qualified roofing contractor as soon as possible to address the underlying issues and prevent future water damage.
